A key element in transforming schools’ beliefs and practices successfully lies in the culture in the classroom and its effects on pedagogical practices. Only within a conducive environment and culture can change take root. Guided by these pertinent considerations, this workshop is designed to equip teachers with the sound knowledge about critical thinking to inform and guide the practices they pick up as reflective and thinking educators of the 21st century.
As part of the workshop, teachers will be given the opportunity to examine their notions of critical thinking and the understandings they have about the importance of critical thinking in education before arriving to a comprehensive conceptualization of critical thinking needed to inform their practices.
They will then be introduced to concept of a culture of thinking (COT) that is aimed at engendering the fertile ground for the classroom and school to be the spaces for teachers to engage students. Given that a COT is where ‘a group’s collective as well as individual thinking is valued, visible, and actively promoted as part of the regular, day-to-day experience of all group members’ (Ritchhart, 2002), teachers will not only build on their understanding of critical thinking but also acquire a repertoire of practicable strategies to create a visible COT in the classroom in which collaborative skills and critical and inventive thinking skills and dispositions can be simultaneously developed and nurtured over time, becoming part of the regular learning experience in school.
